Frentz Rudolf Rudolfovich

Russian and Soviet painter, graphic artist, set designer, artist of decorative and applied arts, teacher. Member LOSH since 1932.


Born in Marienburg, St. Petersburg Province, in the family of the artist, academician of painting R. F. Frentz. He studied at the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at IAH in the battle class (1910–1918) under V. Ye. Savinsky and N. S. Samokish.


In 1918–1925 he headed the Agitation-poster workshop, was engaged in a poster, decorative design of city buildings for the revolutionary holidays, performed sketches of painting boxes, plates, trays. In the 1920s - 1930s he worked as a battle painter, continuing the tradition of battle painting of the XIX century. Created one of the first Soviet dioramas - "Winter Storm" (1929). Performed dioramas "Defense of Petrograd" (1939), "Battle of the Volga" (1946). He also wrote genre scenes, cityscapes, portraits.


From 1915 - participated in exhibitions. Member and exhibitor associations: "The Community of Artists" (1922-1925), AHRR - AHR (1924). He exhibited his works at exhibitions of sketches and theatrical scenery and works of workshops of the decorative institute (1922), Petrograd artists of all directions (1923), at the jubilee exhibition of theatrical-decorative art (1927) in Petrograd / Leningrad, “Soviet drawing” in Kuibyshev (1929) , at the exhibition of works of Soviet revolutionary themes (1930), at the exhibition Socialist Construction in the Visual Arts (1931) in Moscow. In 1928 his personal exhibition took place in Leningrad.


He taught at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture - the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. Repin (1939-1956), professor. Since 1949 he taught at the Leningrad Higher School of Industrial Art (LVHPU them. V. I. Mukhina).


The works of R. R. Frenz are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, in many other museum collections and private collections.
